Saltdogs end Wingnuts season

Wichita, KS- The Wingnuts fell to the Lincoln Saltdogs 6-1 in game five of the North Division Finals on Sunday at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium, putting an end to a great season.

Lincoln got on the board early with a solo home run by Phil Hawke in the first inning and added two more in the third on RBI singles by Shea McFeely and Brandon Jones.  The Saltdogs put the game away with a three-run home run by Shawn McGill in the seventh to go up 6-0.  The Wingnuts scored their lone run on a solo shot by Michael Thompson in the eighth and then left the bases loaded in the ninth to end the game.

Jarrett Gardner picked up the win for Lincoln going six strong innings, while four relievers combined to finish things up.  The Saltdogs will face the Pensacola Pelicans for the American Association Championship.  Wingnuts starter Will Savage suffered the defeat, throwing 7 and 2/3 innings.

The Wingnuts tremendous season - in which they went a league-best 58-38 - comes to an end one win shy of a trip to the American Association Finals.  The Wichita Thunder are up next, dropping the puck on their 18th season on Friday, October 16th versus the Amarillo Gorillas.  For tickets call the Wichita Pro Sports office at (316) 264-4625.

Strong Pitching leads North to 6-2 All-Star win

Grand Prairie, TX- Two members of the Sioux Falls Canaries paced the North Division’s offense and helped the visitors claim a 6-2 win over the South Division in the American Association’s All-Star Game on Tuesday.

RF Cory Harris tripled in the first inning to give the North a 2-0 lead before 3B Trevor Lawhorn snapped a 2-2 tie with a two-run single in the top of the sixth.  Lawhorn finished 2-for-4 and was named the Meyvn Baseball Company Player of the Game.

The South was only able to muster four hits against the North’s steady parade of quality pitchers.  The North used all eight hurlers on their roster with only starter Brandon Kintzler working more than one inning.  The South hitters generated just one base runner in their final 16 at bats in the contest.  Wichita’s Derek Blacksher pitched the fifth inning, struck out two, and was the winner.

The top of the sixth inning was decisive as the North used five hits to score four times off Grand Prairie’s Kieran Mattison, who took the loss.
