SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 5-2 to the Sioux Falls Pheasants at Sioux Falls Stadium on Tuesday night.
Down 2-1, the Pheasants rallied for four runs in the bottom of the eighth off of Cephas Howard. Tim Hutting led off with a walk and advanced to second when Joe Anthonsen was hit by a pitch trying to sacrifice. Gus Milner beat out another sacrifice bunt attempt to load the bases. Reggie Abercrombie reached on an infield single to shortstop that scored Hutting and tied the game. Beau Torbert gave the Pheasants their first lead of the night, chopping a single up the middle through a drawn in infield to plate two runs. After Doug Hurn relieved Howard, Hunter Jobes added another infield single that drove in a run to make it 5-2.
The Wingnuts led most of the night, scoring an early run in the second. Chris Colton reached on an infield singled with one out. Colton stole second, advanced to third on a base hit to center from Michael Thompson, and came home on Jeff Christy's RBI single down the right field line to give the Wingnuts a 1-0 lead.
Mario Delgado pulled a long, line drive home run to right-center with one out in the third to make it 2-0 Wichita.
Tim Hutting homered to left-center in the bottom of the inning to get Sioux Falls on the board.
Gabe Medina pitched seven stellar innings for a second consecutive start. Medina allowed one earned run on just two hits, while striking out six and walking two on 98 pitches. Medina retired the leadoff hitter in every inning that he worked. With the tying run on second and one out in the sixth, Medina fired back-to-back strikeouts of Milner and Abercrombie to retire the side.
Doug Hurn worked a scoreless inning in relief. The Wingnuts left 12 runners on base in the loss.
