SIOUX CITY, IA- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 2-0 to the Sioux City Explorers at Lewis and Clark Park on Sunday evening.
Explorers' starter Jae Jung threw a complete game, three-hit shutout on 94 pitches to earn the win. Jung struck out one and walked three. The Wingnuts had only one runner past second base in the game.
T.J. Bohn hit a solo home run to left field with two outs off of Wingnuts' starter Sean Teague in the bottom of the fourth inning to drive in the first run of the game.
Facing trouble in the bottom of the fifth, Teague was helped out when Eric Williams gunned down Derek Schermerhorn at home plate for the final out of the inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, Ray Serrano hit a double that fell in right-center field with one out. Serrano scored on a broken bat base hit to left by Bohn to make it 2-0. For a second straight inning, the Wingnuts cut down a run at the plate for the final out. Brett Mieras attempted to score from first on Jared Keel's double down the left field line, but Williams fired to cutoff man Josh Horn who launched a one-hop strike to Jeff Christy who withstood a collision at the plate to hold the ball for the out.
Sean Teauge allowed just one run on five hits in five innings in his first professional start, using only 66 pitches. Teague struck out one and walked three, throwing just 66 pitches in the loss. Cephas Howard, returning from injury and working for the first time in seven days, pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth.
Teague was signed by the Wingnuts earlier in the morning to fill the 22nd spot on their roster. Teague was previously with the Northern League's Joliet Jackhammers, appearing in seven games this season. The 24-year old was drafted by the Florida Marlins last year in the 25th round out of Southern Polytechnic State University in Georgia.
The Wingnuts head to Sioux Falls and open a three-game series against the Pheasants on Monday at 7:05 p.m. Nick Singleton takes on right-hander Ben Moore.
