WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts beat the Sioux City Explorers 5-2 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Monday night.
For a second consecutive start, Gabe Medina pitched eight terrific innings to pick up a victory. Medina allowed two earned runs on seven hits, striking out four and walking three.
The Wingnuts supported Medina early with two runs in the bottom of the first. Ryan Patterson singled with one out and came home when Josh Horn tripled down the left field line. Mario Delgado drove in Horn with a groundout to second base to make it 2-0.
Medina faced a bases loaded, no out jam in the top of the second, but induced a double play ball by Brett Mieras kept Sioux City to just one run scored.
Leading 2-1 in the fifth, the Wingnuts opened the inning with singles from Chad Rothford and Steve Pearson. A hit-and-run groundball from Michael Sharp advanced the runners an extra base. Newly acquired second baseman Jake Bradshaw doubled down the left field line to score two more runs and open a 4-1 lead. It was Bradshaw's first professional hit.
The X's threatened in the sixth with first and second and no outs, but Medina once again limited them to one run on an RBI groundout by Kent Sakamoto.
Medina walked the tying runs on base in the top of the seventh, but came back from a 3-0 count to strikeout Dustin Jones to end the inning. Medina worked around a leadoff walk in the eighth by getting Sakamoto to hit into an inning-ending double play.
Rothford led off the bottom of the eight with a double to left-center and advanced to third on a single to right by Pearson. Michael Sharp hit a sacrifice fly to right that extended the Wingnuts' lead to 5-2.
Justin Dowdy took over in the top of the ninth and struck out two to lock down his ninth save of the year. Jayson Miller took the loss for the Explorers, allowing four earned runs in six innings.
