LAREDO, TX- The Wichita Wingnuts (34-22) lost 8-6 to the Laredo Lemurs (24-31) at Uni-Trade Stadium on Monday night.
Tied at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Lemurs used RBI doubles from Javier Brito, Stephen Douglas, and Steve Pearson to open an 8-5 lead. Uriaq Marquez opened the inning with a triple to right field.
Wichita rallied in the eighth when Ryan Khoury was hit by a pitch leading off and David Peralta reached on an error by Marquez at shortstop. After a wild pitch, John Rodriguez drilled a flyball to deep right field that was run down by Pearson for the first out. Khoury scored on the sacrifice fly, before Lemurs' reliever Chaz Roe escaped the inning without further trouble.
Mike Benacka worked around a leadoff single from Steve Carrillo in the top of the ninth, striking out the side to earn the save.
Rodriguez gave Wichita a 1-0 lead with a two-out, solo home run to left-center in the top of the first.
John Allen tied it with a solo shot to left leading off the bottom of the second.
Gerardo Avila singled up the middle to start the top of the fourth for Wichita, and advanced to second on a walk to Carrillo. After Jared McDonald laid down a sacrifice bunt, Jessie Mier lined a single to right-center that made it 3-1 in favor of the Wingnuts.
Laredo answered back with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Allen drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on an error charged to second baseman Jairo Perez. Palmer Karr Jr. was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Back-to-back walks to Anthony Scelfo and Brian Peterson forced in the tying runs. After Jared Simon relieved Wingnuts' starter Jeff Nadeau, Jimmy Mojica blooped a single to shallow center to drive in Karr with the go-ahead run. Scelfo scored the Lemurs' fifth run on a groundball double play to second by Marquez.
With two outs and no one on base in the top of the fifth, Perez singled on a shallow flyball to left, stole second, and scored on Avila's line drive single to center.
The Wingnuts tied the game in the top of the sixth on a wild pitch.
James Baker took the loss for Wichita, allowing three earned runs in one and one-third innings.
Edwin Walker earned the win in relief, working a scoreless top of the seventh.
Nadeau took a no-decision, allowing five runs, three earned, on four hits in three-plus innings. Nadeau walked five and struck out one.
Mark Haynes started for Laredo and also took a no-decision, allowing five runs, four earned, on nine hits in five and one-third innings. Haynes walked two and struck out three.
Nick Walters worked one and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief. Wichita left 12 runners on base in the loss.
