WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (52-39) lost 9-6 to the Gary SouthShore RailCats (46-46) at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Saturday night.
Gary built a 3-0 lead in the top of the first and protected it through the end of the night. Adam Klein and Mike Massaro led off the game with back-to-back infield singles. Brian Kolb beat out a sacrifice attempt at first to load the bases with no outs. A wild pitch and consecutive RBI groundouts from Ryan Babineau and Mike Rohde helped accounted for the runs.
With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the first, Greg Porter lifted a sacrifice fly to left that trimmed the lead to 3-1.
In the top of the second, David Cooper walked with one out, took third on Chase Tucker's single down the right field line, and scored on a sacrifice fly to center from Klein.
Ryan Khoury brought the Wingnuts within two runs with a two-out, RBI double to right-center in the bottom of the second, but the RailCats scored four times in the top of the fourth to break the game open. Eric Suttle, Chris Carrara, Cooper, Tucker, and Klein hit consecutive singles to start the inning. Tucker's drove in Suttle, while Klein's plated both Carrara and Cooper. Brian Kolb added an RBI single later in the inning to make it 8-2.
Wichita scratched out a run in the bottom of the sixth on a Jake Kahaulelio sacrifice fly and added three more in the bottom of the seventh to once again get within two runs. With runners on first and second and two outs, Jessie Mier lined a single to center field that scored Porter from second. Jared McDonald followed with a two-run triple to right-center. Dexter Carter relieved Estevan Uriegas and retired Khoury to end the inning.
Carter worked a scoreless eighth, while the RailCats scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth against Nick Walters.
Marco Gonzalez worked around a leadoff double from Wilson Batista in the bottom of the ninth to earn the save.
Ryan Hinson started for the Wingnuts and took the loss, allowing eight earned runs on 12 hits in seven innings. Hinson walked one and struck out three.
Stephen Hiscock earned the win for Gary SouthShore, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in five and one-third. Hiscock walked four and struck out one.
Edgar Martinez worked a scoreless relief inning for the Wingnuts. Khoury had two hits and has now hit safely in nine straight. C.J. Ziegler also had two hits and is now riding an eight-game hitting streak. Seven different Wingnuts had at least one hit, while all nine starters reached base at least once.
Prior to the game, the Wingnuts announced their 2012 organizational awards. John Rodriguez was named Most Valuable Player. Josh Lowey was named Pitcher of the Year. Ryan Khoury earned Unsung Hero honors.
