LAREDO, TX- The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the Laredo Lemurs 6-0 in Game One of the American Association Division Series at Uni-Trade Stadium on Wednesday night.
Postgame Comments From Kevin Hooper, Josh Lowey, and Greg Porter
Wichita leads the best-of-five series 1-0.
Josh Lowey improved to 5-1 lifetime in the postseason with seven shutout innings to earn the win. Lowey scattered four hits, walked two, and struck out four. Lowey is now 5-1 with a 2.88 ERA in nine career playoff starts.
Lowey worked out of the only jam he faced in the bottom of the second. With the bases loaded and two outs, Anthony Scelfo drilled a deep flyball to right-center field that was caught by a sprinting David Peralta. Following the threat, Lowey retired 16 of the final 18 batters to face him through the end of the seventh.
Offensively, the Wingnuts collected 13 hits. Eight players had at least one hit, while all nine starters reached base at least once. The Wingnuts scored the first run of the game in the top of the third. With runners on first and third and two outs, Greg Porter swung at a 3-0 pitch and lined a single to left field that scored John Rodriguez.
Jake Kahaulelio lined a home run that just cleared the left field wall with one out in the top of the fifth. Rodriguez followed with a bunt single to third, took second on a groundball to third base from C.J. Ziegler, and scored on another clutch, two-out hit to left by Porter.
Ryan Khoury homered on a deep flyball to left field with two outs in the top of the sixth. Khoury finished the game with two hits, a walk, and two stolen bases.
Mike Conroy was hit by a pitch with one out in the top of the eighth. After Conroy stole second, Steve Stanley lined a single to right-center to make it 5-0.
Nick Walters struck out two during a scoreless bottom of the eighth.
Kahaulelio doubled leading off the top of the ninth and scored the Wingnuts' final run of the game two batters later on Ziegler's third base hit.
James Hoyt worked around a single and a walk to pitch a scoreless bottom of the ninth. Hoyt struck out Brian Peterson for the final out.
Matthew Way started for the Lemurs and took the loss, allowing four earned runs on nine hits in six innings. Way walked one and struck out two.
