WINNIPEG, MANITOBA- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 7-3 to the Winnipeg Goldeyes in Game Two of the American Association Championship Series at Shaw Park on Wednesday night.
Wichita trails the best-of-five series 2-0.
Amos Ramon cracked a two-out, three-run homer off of Ryan Hinson in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Winnipeg a 5-3 lead. Six of the Goldeyes' seven runs scored with two outs.
Josh Mazzola lined a single to left leading off the bottom of the sixth and advanced to second two batters later when Michael Coles was hit by a pitch. Hinson struck out Kyle Day looking for the second out of the inning before Ramon's home run.
With first and third and two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Chris Roberson doubled into the right field corner to drive in Coles and Price Kendall to break the game open at 7-3.
In the top of the ninth, a Jessie Mier single, a Mike Conroy walk, and a Steve Stanley bunt single helped Wichita load the bases after there were two outs and no one on base. Goldeyes' closer Brian Beuning then retired Ryan Khoury on a popout to first base during an eight-pitch at bat to end the game.
Winnipeg scratched out the first run of the night in the bottom of the first when Yurendell de Caster scored from third base on a two-out wild pitch.
Wichita responded in the top of the second. C.J. Ziegler was hit by a pitch while Greg Porter singled through the right side to put runners on first and second. After David Peralta lined out to left field, Mier crushed a three-run homer to left-center that made it 3-1 in favor of the Wingnuts.
Mazzola drew a two-out, bases loaded walk in the bottom of the third to trim Wichita's lead to 3-2.
Hinson took the loss, allowing five earned runs on five hits in five and two-thirds innings. Hinson walked three and struck out seven.
Chris Salamida started for Winnipeg and earned the win, allowing three earned runs on five hits in six and two-thirds. Salamida walked two and struck out six.
Beuning earned a four-out save.
James Baker worked one and one-third scoreless innings for the Wingnuts.
The Wingnuts will try to keep their season alive on Friday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Game Three of the series.
