WICHITA, KS - The Wichita Wingnuts have announced two more signings for the 2009 season, with the addition of catcher Zach Goldberg and shortstop Derek Jennings.
A Wichita native, Goldberg joins the Wingnuts after spending most of 2008 with the division-rival St. Paul Saints. Goldberg began training camp with the Wingnuts, before making his way to Evansville in the Frontier League, and eventually the Saints, where he appeared in 23 games. He hit safely in nine of his first 13 games, and three of his six RBI came against Wichita. Goldberg split time with the Sioux City Explorers and the Frontier League's Kalamazoo Kings in his rookie season in 2007, hitting .281 in 13 games with two homeruns.
Jennings was a standout for the Seattle Studs, hitting .276 with 26 RBI in 49 games. The Renton, Washington native was named to the 2008 NBC World Series All-American Team at shortstop, helping the Studs reach the tournament's championship game. Jennings had stints in the Frontier League with River City and Fargo-Moorhead before joining the Studs.
Goldberg and Jennings join returning All-Star third baseman Michael Thompson as Wichita's current players under contract for 2009. American Association teams can carry up to 28 players through Spring Training, which will take place May 2nd-May 13th.
Wichita opens the 2009 season on May 14th against the Lincoln Saltdogs at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. The Wichita Thunder also return to action this weekend, hosting the Texas Brahmas on Friday at 7:05 p.m. at the Kansas Coliseum.
