FORT WORTH, TX- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 8-7 to the Fort Worth Cats at LaGrave Field on Tuesday night.
Wichita scored five runs before the Cats ever came to the plate, but Fort Worth scored eight unanswered runs to build an 8-5 lead before a Wingnuts' rally fell short in the top of the ninth.
The Cats began chipping away in the bottom of the first. With one out, Kelley Gulledge hit a grand slam to right field that cut the Wingnuts' lead to 5-4. Brian Fryer tied the game with a two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the second.
Jose Duran hit a solo home run leading off the fourth against Wingnuts' starter Bubba O'Donnell to give Fort Worth its first lead of the night. O'Donnell was relieved by Jae Jung who retired the side in the fourth. Jung allowed back-to-back home runs to John Allen and Gulledge in the fifth to make it 8-5 Cats.
O'Donnell took the loss, allowing six earned runs in three-plus innings. O'Donnell struck out two, walked one, and allowed eight hits. Dwayne Pollok earned the win for the Cats, allowing five runs, four earned, with eight strikeouts in eight innings.
The Wingnuts scored twice in the ninth to pull within one. After three walks from reliever Robert Romero, Cesar Suarez hit a two-out, line drive single to center off of Justin Vaclavik that made it a one run game. Vaclavic recovered and got Jorge Cortes to ground out to first for the final out to notch the save.
Ryan Patterson led off the game with a single to center and moved to second when Suarez was hit by a pitch. Cortes hit a broken bat single to left that scored Patterson with the first run of the night. Three batters later, Jorge Delgado hit an opposite field grand slam to open a 5-0 lead.
Brandon Mathes worked three scoreless innings in relief of Jung. Dustin Pease pitched a perfect eighth.
