SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 7-3 to the Sioux Falls Pheasants at Sioux Falls Stadium on Wednesday night.
Eight of the Wingnuts' nine starters had at least one hit, but Pheasants' starter Brandon Rapoza managed a complete game on 104 pitches to earn the win.
Trevor Lawhorn homered to deep left field against Wingnuts' starter Ryan Hinson to lead off the bottom of the second and give Sioux Falls an early 1-0 lead. Gus Milner followed with a double down the left field line. Milner advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Henry Contreras' line drive single to left. After Hinson retired Joe Anthonsen on a groundout to second, Kevin Carby lifted a flyball into the wind that carried off the bottom of the fence in right field, scoring Contreras from second to make it 3-0.
A Josh Horn single and Ryan Patterson double gave Wichita second and third with no outs in the top of the fourth, but Rapoza retired the next three hitters in a row to limit the Wingnuts to one run. Juan Richardson drove in Horn with a groundball to shortstop.
In the bottom of the same inning, Milner led off with a home run to straightaway center. Sioux Falls then took advantage of two Wingnuts' errors that led to two unearned runs, increasing their lead to 6-1.
Wichita scored one in the sixth on an RBI single from Richardson and another in the ninth on Jorge Delgado's RBI double to right-center.
The Pheasants' final run came on a solo home run to center from Brandon Sing in the bottom of the seventh.
Hinson took the loss, allowing seven runs, five earned, in seven complete innings. Hinson struck out five, walked two, and allowed nine hits.
Rapoza allowed 11 hits, walked one, and struck out zero in the complete game victory.
Gary Lee worked a scoreless bottom of the eighth for the Wingnuts. Wichita hit into four double plays in the game.
