WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts announced several transactions on Wednesday, including the purchase of Wingnuts' right-handed pitcher Matt Nevarez by the Boston Red Sox' organization.
Nevarez was 3-1 with three saves and a 2.40 ERA in 14 relief outings. Nevarez struck out 25 batters in 15.0 innings pitched, while allowing just nine hits and seven walks. The 25-year-old Nevarez is expected to report to the Red Sox' High-A Carolina League affiliate in Salem, VA. Nevarez becomes the 12th Wingnuts player sold to a Major League organization since their inaugural season in 2008.
"We wish 'Matty' nothing but the best," said Wingnuts' manager Kevin Hooper. "He's been throwing great over the last two weeks, and I know he really enjoyed his time here. Hopefully we'll be watching him on TV one day. With his arm, I really believe he has a chance to reach the Big Leagues."
Wichita also learned that right-handed reliever Edgar Martinez has signed with the Mexican League's Guerreros de Oaxaca (Oaxaca Warriors). Martinez was 1-0 with one save and a 2.94 ERA in 15 relief appearances. Martinez had 10 strikeouts in 15.1 innings of work.
With a limited bullpen the last two games, the Wingnuts signed Pitching Coach Luke Robertson to a contract. Robertson spent three years in the Oakland Athletics' organization, and last pitched professionally in 2004 for the High-A California League's Modesto Nuts.
Additionally, the Wingnuts re-acquired infielder Jared McDonald from the Lincoln Saltdogs in exchange for cash. McDonald is hitting .287 with six doubles, one triple, one home run, eight RBI, and four stolen bases in 28 games played between Wichita and Lincoln. McDonald was first traded to Lincoln on June 1st and is expected to play the outfield upon his return.
The Wingnuts open a four-game series at Sioux City on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Josh Lowey will take on right-hander Ty Marotz. All the action can be heard locally on Oldies 92.7 KWME and worldwide at www.pressboxproductionsradio.com
