WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts, proud member of the American Association of Professional Baseball (AA), introduced Spinner the Squirrel as their mascot at a press conference today at Lawrence Dumont Stadium.
Spinner, a lifelong Wichita resident and Thunderdog’s best friend, has been a regular at Lawrence Dumont Stadium for many years, although like Big Bird’s friend Snuffleupagus, has rarely been seen. Spinner, the 6’8” rodent, will wear jersey number 00 when he takes the field with the Wingnuts this season.
“Spinner was a no-brainer to be our first mascot”, muttered Thunderdog. “He has been bugging me about it for months and I am confident that he will do a tremendous job of bringing a smile to the face of everyone that comes to a game this season and for seasons to come.”
Wichita’s newest baseball franchise will begin their first season of play on May 7th, when they host the Sioux City Explorers for a three-game set at Lawrence Dumont Stadium, but they are facing their first test today, as they battle the Inland Empire 66 in the first round of CNBC’s best minor league baseball logo contest.
The contest, which will run through March 31, features 64 teams in a single-elimination bracket decided by online voting. The Wichita Wingnuts enter the tournament as a number 12 seed, but just being selected is an impressive feat, considering there are 252 minor league baseball teams. The Wichita Thunder, meanwhile, returns to action on Friday when they host the Oklahoma City Blazers at 7:05 p.m. For more information on baseball or hockey, please call our office at 264-GOAL or visit our websites www.wichitathunder.com and www.wichitawingnuts.com.
