WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts, after a see-saw battle, finally claimed victory over the Trenton Thunder yesterday in the Sweet 16 round of CNBC.com’s best minor league baseball logo contest.
The Wingnuts fell behind by as much as 6% yesterday afternoon, but had pulled even by the close of business. When the dust settled, the Wingnuts claimed victory with 54% of the over 17,000 votes cast.
The contest, which will run through March 31, features 64 teams in a single-elimination bracket decided by online voting. The Wingnuts entered the tournament as a #12 seed and have already defeated the #5 seed Inland Empire 66 convincingly, as well as the #4 seed Savannah Sand Gnats and now the #16 seed Thunder.
The Elite 8 round begins today with the #14 Augusta Green Jackets taking on the #2 Columbus Catfish and the #9 seed Grand Prairie Airhogs of the American Association, battling the #3 seed Southern Illinois Miners. The Wingnuts and another #12 seed the Quad City River Bandits, will battle the #6 seed Dayton Dragons and #2 seed Clinton Lumber Kings tomorrow.
