WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts are now 5-0 - despite never actually having played a game - and will battle the Southern Illinois Miners today in the Championship Game of CNBC.com’s best minor league baseball logo contest.
When the voting began on Monday, Wichita had a sizable deficit to make up against the Clinton Lumberkings. Still, the masses spoke, and by mid-afternoon, the Wingnuts had taken a lead they would never relinquish. When the dust settled this morning, the Wingnuts were declared the winners with 58% of the over 43,000 votes cast.
The contest, which ends on Wednesday at 8:00 a.m. Central Time, began with 64 teams in a single-elimination bracket decided by online voting. The Wingnuts entered the tournament as a #12 seed and defeated the #5 seed Inland Empire 66, the #4 seed Savannah Sand Gnats, the #16 seed Trenton Thunder the #6 seed Dayton Dragons and now the #2 seed Lumberkings. The Wingnuts logo was designed by Associated Advertising. It features a sinister baseball hiding behind the words “Wingnuts” and wearing a wingnut for a baseball cap. The team colors are red, silver and black. Wichitan Hank Haneberg came up with the team name. Today’s contest winner will have the distinction of being the best logo in baseball among the 252 minor league teams in North America.
Wichita’s newest baseball team will begin their inaugural season of play on May 7th, when they host the Sioux City Explorers for a three-game set at Lawrence Dumont Stadium. For more information or to order tickets, please call our office at 264-GOAL or visit our website at www.wichitawingnuts.com.
