WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts gave it a great run, but were finally defeated by the Southern Illinois Miners this morning in the Championship Game of CNBC.com’s best minor league baseball logo contest.
The Wingnuts led from the start and by the time most people were going to sleep, had built a 65-35% lead, with around 75,000 votes cast. That’s when the Miners went to their voting tactics and mysteriously another 90,000 votes showed up. Still, the Wingnuts are proud to be the second best logo in minor league baseball, an impressive feat considering there are 252 minor league teams in North America.
The contest began nearly three weeks ago with 64 teams in a single-elimination bracket decided by online voting. The Wingnuts entered the tournament as a #12 seed and defeated the #5 seed Inland Empire 66, the #4 seed Savannah Sand Gnats, the #16 seed Trenton Thunder, the #6 seed Dayton Dragons and the #2 seed Clinton Lumberkings.
The Wingnuts logo was designed by Associated Advertising. It features a sinister baseball hiding behind the words “Wingnuts” and wearing a wingnut for a baseball cap. The team colors are red, silver and black. Wichitan Hank Haneberg came up with the team name.
The Wingnuts would like to thank our fans, The Wichita Eagle and all of the local TV and radio stations for their support during this contest. Wichita’s newest baseball team will begin their inaugural season of play on May 7th, when they host the Sioux City Explorers for a three-game set at Lawrence Dumont Stadium.
