WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts made a handful player transactions today, placing outfielder Dustan Mohr on the seven-day disabled list, releasing RHP Kevin Foeman, and signing outfielder Bub Bergstrom and RHP Asher Demme.
Mohr will undergo precautionary surgery on his thyroid this weekend and will be eligible to return to the lineup on Monday July 28th vs. Sioux City. Mohr had also been slowed by a calf strain suffered during last week's series at Fort Worth.
Bergstrom, whose given name is Branden, led the United League in walks in 2007 with 82 and finished second in stolen bases with 37. The Seattle, WA native started 2008 with the Harlingen Whitewings of the United League, hitting .266 in 44 games, while drawing 31 walks. Bergstrom had a career on-base percentage of .406 coming into this season.
Demme (pronounced DEEM), a 6th round draft pick by the Braves in 2003, will join Wichita's bullpen having sat out the 2007 season. The Alexandria, VA native last played in 2006 for the Rome Braves in the South Atlantic League. He has a career ERA of 4.90 in 163.2 IP, while striking out 108. Foeman appeared in three games for Wichita, posting a 3.86 ERA.
Wichita returns to action Wednesday night, opening a four-game series at St. Paul. First pitch at Midway Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Wichita will have three representatives in Tuesday's All-Star Game, also in St. Paul, with shortstop Kevin Hooper and second baseman Brenan Herrera starting. Third baseman Michael Thompson will be the reserve infielder. The Wingnuts return home on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. to host Sioux City. For tickets call the Wingnuts office at (316) 264-4625.
