Those who missed the first 72 games of the Wingnuts' season could have seen their story told in about four hours on Wednesday. After playing perhaps their best game of the year and beating St. Paul 7-0 in Game 1 of a doubleheader, Wichita missed its chance to build on it, losing 4-2 in Game 2 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Both games were seven innings.
The Wingnuts remained at .500 for the season and dropped to 11-16 in the second half. They've been unable to sustain a winning streak despite several potentially season-defining wins.
"We needed to have that (second) one," Wichita second baseman Brenan Herrera said. "In the first one, we came out ready to go and got them. The second game, we faced an All-Star pitcher (Charlie Ruud) and missed some opportunities."
