WICHITA, KS - The Wingnuts held on for a 6-5 win over the St. Paul Saints on Saturday night at Midway Stadium.
Leonard Landeros earned his seventh win of the year, allowing just one run in seven innings of work. For the second straight night, Kevin Hooper collected four base hits. Hooper clubbed his first homerun of the season to leadoff the game, giving the Wingnuts an early 1-0 lead.
The Wingnuts received a three RBI performance from Brenan Herrera, who went 2-5 with a pair of doubles. Michael Thompson became the first player in Wingnuts' history to reach double digits in homeruns when he hit his 10th of the year in the top of the eighth. Both Thompson and Hooper finished a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.
Sioux City defeated Grand Prairie on Friday, officially eliminating the Wingnuts from the second half division race. However, the Wingnuts are only 2.5 games back of the North Division wild card. The Sioux Falls Canaries are currently 1.0 game behind first place Sioux City in the second half race.
With the Wingnuts leading 6-1, the Saints rallied for four runs in the bottom of the ninth, but Byron Embry recorded the final two outs to record his 19th save. The series concludes tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m.
Wichita returns home Sunday August 17th against Sioux Falls for their final homestand of the year. For tickets, call the Wingnuts office at (316) 264-4625.
