Wingnuts overcome Saltdogs, weather for fifth straight win

Wichita, KS- The Wingnuts completed their third sweep of the season and extended their winning-streak to five games, beating the Lincoln Saltdogs and torrential rain in amazing comeback fashion on Sunday at Lawrence Dumont Stadium, 5-1.

Lincoln finally scratched a run across in the fifth to break a scoreless tie thanks to a balk and two Wingnuts errors and it looked like that might hold up.  Heavy wind and rain took over after six innings, causing a rain delay of 96 minutes.  When the rain delay started at 6:50 p.m. there were 6,011 fans in attendance.  After the rain, lightning and pitch black skies subsided, play finally resumed at 8:26 p.m. with a skeleton crowd of around 611 fans.

In the eighth, with heavy rain and lightning again approaching, the Wingnuts erupted for five runs and batted around.  Nick Blasi doubled home the tying run, followed by an RBI single by Dustan Mohr.  With two outs, Greg Porter singled home a run and then Brenan Herrera added two more with a double down the right field line.  The rain and lightning picked up again in the top of the ninth, but Amad Stephens made quick work of the Saltdogs to seal the victory and earn his sixth save of the season.

Wingnuts starter Will Savage was phenomenal again, allowing just one run.  Doug Hurn pitched a scoreless seventh and Tyler Rhoden a scoreless eighth to record the victory.

The Wingnuts now hit the road for four games, starting tomorrow night at the Sioux Falls Canaries.  Wichita will return home on Friday to host the St. Paul Saints for a three-game set.  For tickets call the Wingnuts office at (316) 264-4625.
