Wichita, KS- The Wingnuts staged an impressive late-inning comeback, defeating the St. Paul Saints 5-4 on Saturday night at Lawrence Dumont Stadium.
St. Paul took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Todd Self and a two-out Wingnuts error. St. Paul added a run in the second on an RBI single by Self to go up 3-0. Wichita got on the board with a run in the second, but could have done more damage as they had bases loaded and no one out. The Wingnuts run scored on a double play ground out by Patrick Brooks.
St. Paul went up 4-1 in the sixth before the 'Nuts bats took over. Wichita cut the lead to 4-3 on a two-run homer by Dustan Mohr in the bottom of the inning, his fifth of the season. Wichita got a huge break in the seventh when an inning-ending ground ball by Josh Horn was booted by Saints second baseman Andrew Bennett, allowing Brooks to score the tying run. In the eighth, Michael Thompson singled home the winning run with two outs.
Wichita starter Derek Blacksher recorded eight strikeouts in seven innings. Justin Young pitched a quick eighth to record the win and Amad Stephens notched his seventh save, picking up two strikeouts in the ninth. Horn, Thompson and Mohr led the Wingnuts with two hits each.
The Wingnuts now lead St. Paul by four games in the Northern Division with the final game of the series Sunday at 5:05 p.m. Brad Davis will get the start for Wichita, going up against Charlie Ruud. For tickets call the Wingnuts office at (316) 264-4625.
