Wichita, KS- The Wingnuts returned home after a 16-game road trip and were edged in the late innings by the Sioux City Explorers, 5-4, on Monday at Lawrence Dumont Stadium.
Dustin Jones put Sioux City on the board with a two-run home run in the top of the second, but Michael Thompson responded with a three-run shot in the bottom of the inning. Wichita added a run in the third on an RBI single in the third.
Wichita starter Adam Cowart left with a 4-2 lead after seven innings, but Joe D'Allesandro allowed a two-run single to Alex Llanos to tie the game in the eighth. In the top of the ninth Derek Schermerhorn knocked in the go ahead run with an RBI groundout off new Wingnuts pitcher Justin Dowdy. David Trahan recorded the final six outs to record the win.
