Delgado Rescues Wingnuts in Eighth

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the St. Paul Saints 10-9 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Saturday night.

Down 9-7 in the bottom of the eighth, the Wingnuts rallied for three runs to take the lead.  After back-to-back walks to Eric williams and Ryan Patterson to open the inning, Mario Delgado ripped a two-run double to right-center off of lefty Payton Tweddale to tie the game.  Later in the inning, Chris Colton singled to left-center to drive in Delgado.

Justin Dowdy was dominant in the ninth, retiring the side in order to earn his second save of the year.  Cephas Howard pitched a perfect eighth to earn the win.

The Wingnuts appeared to break the game open in the second, scoring seven runs.  A throwing error by Hector Estrella on a potential double play ball gave the Wingnuts a 1-0 lead.  Jeff Christy added an RBI single to make it 2-0.  With the bases loaded and two outs, Ryan Patterson hit a flyball to center that was dropped by Coby Smith, allowing three runs to score.  Delgado followed with the Wingnuts' first home run of the season, a two-run shot over the right field wall on a line drive.

St. Paul began chipping away against Wingnuts' starter Brandon Mathes in the third on a two-run home run from Ole Sheldon.  The Saints added four more runs in the fourth, highlighted by a two-out, two-run double from Jason Cooper that sliced the lead to 7-6.

Sacrifice flies from Steve Mays and Coby Smith in the top of the fifth against Will Morgan gave the Saints an improbably 8-7 lead.  Josh Alley dragged a two-out bunt single in the seventh to score an insurance run before the Wingnuts' comeback in the eighth.

Delgado went 3 for 5 with three extra base hits and four RBI.  Eric Williams reached base four of five plate appearances and has reached in 13 of his last 15.  Colton, Jeff Christy, and Jonathan Dziomba each had multi-hit nights.

Mathes took a no-decision, charged with six earned runs in 3.2 IP.  Saints' starter Ryan Morse allowed seven runs, two earned, in 4.2 IP, also a no-decision.

The Wingnuts and Saints play game three of their four-game series Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m.  Nick Singleton makes his third start of the season and is opposed by right-hander Joe Woerman.  For tickets, call the Wingnuts' office at (316) 264-NUTS.
