Four-Run Fourth too Much for Wingnuts

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 7-4 to the St. Paul Saints at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Monday night.

Ole Sheldon hit a three-run home run to left field off of Adam Cowart in the top of the third to give the Saints a 3-0 lead.  After a two-out single from Brent Krause, Gerard Haran reached on a throwing error by Michael Thompson.  Hector Estrella followed with a line drive single to center that scored Krause and made it 4-0.

Wichita tacked on two runs in the bottom half.  Josh Horn doubled home Patrick Brooks from first with a drive that one-hopped the left field fence.  Eric Williams reached on an infield single.  Hector Estrella's throw on the play bounced wide into foul territory and allowed Horn to score from second.

St. Paul re-extened their lead in the top of the fourth.  Sheldon doubled with two outs and no one on base and came around on a single to left by Jason Cooper.  Haran added an RBI single off of Doug Hurn to make it 6-2.

After an eighth inning sacrifice fly by Sheldon gave the Saints a 7-2 lead, Mario Delgado hit a two-run home run inside the right field line off of Kyle Foster to bring the Wingnuts within three.

Hunter Davis pitched a perfect ninth to pick up the save.  Adam Cowart started on three days of rest and allowed six runs, five earned, in 3.2 innings.  Cowart struck out three and walked one.  Todd Mathison picked up the win, allowing one earned run in seven innings.  Doug Hurn pitched 3.1 strong relief innings, allowing no runs on two hits and throwing just 33 pitches.

The Wingnuts head to Lincoln and face the Saltdogs Tuesday night for the first time since the 2009 Division Series.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.  All the action can be heard live on Oldies 93.5 KWME and worldwide at www.kleyam.com  The Wingnuts return home for a three-game series versus Sioux City on Friday night at 7:05 p.m.  For tickets, call the Wingnunts' office at (316) 264-NUTS.
